28 Feb 2008 - Major Upgrade Planned for Craiglockhart Sports Centre

Sports Centre Elevation from East

There are plans for a £2.5 million upgrade to the Centre, starting this Summer if all goes to schedule.

Since this is adjacent to the Craiglockhart Hills Conservation Area the external changes will have to be in keeping with the valley.  The full sets of plans are now available on-line from the Council's Planning Portal.

Edinburgh Leisure will be issuing periodic progress reports and we show below their February Newsletter.

Dear Customer

THE REFURBISHMENT OF CRAIGLOCKHART SPORTS CENTRE (Feb 08)

What news for you since my last update to you in November ’07?

Well the design team made up of; architects, mechanical and electrical engineers, structural engineers and a quantity surveyor have been working on the design and preparing information for the submission of the planning application and for the building warrant.

We now have drawings available that show the layout and elevations of the refurbished centre – these are displayed in the south foyer (located halfway down the main corridor leading to the main hall). The design team are also preparing information for the building tender and work has started on procuring building contractors.

Key dates for the project are still under review but at this stage we anticipate the centre closing for building work in July ’08. However we will keep you posted on this and how things are progressing via updates and the Edinburgh Leisure web site. And, for those of you who would prefer to be contacted directly, either by post or via email, we will be putting systems in place to collect your contact details to enable information to come direct to you throughout the duration of the project.

Whilst we are all, understandably, very excited at the prospect of a new refurbished centre I must reiterate that the project will only go ahead if it is affordable i.e. the income generated by the refurbished centre must cover Edinburgh Leisure’s cost of borrowing. Whilst steps have, and will continue to be taken, to get cost certainty the nature of the building market in Edinburgh means that there is a real risk that building costs / tender will come in over budget. If this is the case then our design proposals and business case will be reviewed.

As always if you have any questions at this stage please contact me Hilary Roberts, Leisure Manager, tel no: 0131 477 8403 or email hilaryroberts@edinburghleisure.co.uk.or a member of the team here at Craiglockhart.

Regards

Hilary Roberts
